Suzy Fund
The Suzy Fund began in 1975 in this parish. The little girl in this photograph died on a rubbish dump in Ethiopia, minutes after it was taken: she was given a name- “Suzy” and it all started from there. Parishioners decided that they wanted to launch a fund to give direct help to people in need, especially starving children. The Fund is run entirely by volunteers and overheads are kept to an absolute minimum.
In the last thirty years or so, it has raised over £600,000 which has been distributed to many charities in many countries. Donations come mainly from St Peter & St Paul’s, but also from St Austin’s Church in Wakefield, and St Cuthbert’s, an Anglican parish in Ackworth and further afield. The Healys folk group were regular contributors and Wakefield Little Theatre has donated the proceeds of some performances. Donations are also made regularly to CAFOD to assist in its work- the parish has become one of that charity’s largest cointributors in the region.
Envelopes for donations are available every week at church.
The Suzy Fund is a Registered Charity Number 283229- donations can be gift-aided
